Local Kite Spots: Presqu’ile Provincial Park
Presqu’ile Provincial Park is located just south of Brighton Ontario (past Colbourne) on shores of Lake Ontario only about 1-1/2 hours East of Toronto…and well worth the drive! The park is beautiful, well maintained and the campsites are nothing less than spectacular. We lucked out and got an amazing site with a view of the lake — usually we’d have to reserve such a coveted site! It was equipped with hydro and a nice fire pit but water hookup and sewer were not available at this particular camp site.
The campsites are only about a 5 minute drive to Beach 1 which is the designated kiting spot in the park. Lots parking and just a short walk to the beach makes this kiteboarding spot easy to access. A wide beach welcomes you to this picturesque kite spot. Beach goers and kiters are well separated by signs and markers in the water.
The view from the beach is spectacular. There’s lots of space to set up your kite and picnic tables to put your gear on so it doesn’t have to be on the wet sand. Easy launch on this wide open beach area and there is usually someone else there who can help you. Drift launch is also a good option.
Great wide open area in the water to kite in and space for a lot of kiters. It can get crowded on weekends like most of the kite spots when it is windy. The water is clean and pretty clear and shallow for a short distance and then gets deep pretty fast. When you get out further you’ll encounter lots of shallow areas close to the two islands you see from shore.
There are restrictions concerning these islands because of birds nesting in these areas so we are not supposed to get too close. A flyer of all rules and restriction is available on the park entrance gate or from a park staff member. Also a box with flyers for rules of kiting on this beach is also available mounted on a post just before you walk to the narrow path to the beach.
One of the kiters we met had a really cool way to make schlepping his gear onto the beach more convenient. We’re going to use some of his ideas and build a cart too – we’ll call it the “Easy Beach Schlepper“. What a great idea!
Lots of beach goers just south of the kite area so, as usual, please respect everyone else sharing the beach and water and do not kite in the areas marked for swimmers only.
As always, I suggest you talk to local riders to find out about kiting on this beach, forecasts and safety rules… or of course, give me a call or text 416-720-3181
Happy kiting and be safe!
